The 2nd Meeting of the Advisory Council of the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRF) Held in Beijing

On December 22, 2019, the 2nd Meeting of the Advisory Council of the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRF) was held in Beijing. The meeting was attended by Jean-Pierre Raffarin, former Prime Minister of France; Mikhail Fradkov, former Prime Minister of Russia; Essam Sharaf, former Prime Minister of Egypt; Mari Elka Pangestu, former Minister of Trade of Indonesia; Erastus J. O. Mwencha, former Deputy Chairperson of African Union Commission; Shamshad Akhtar, former Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific of the United Nations; Kishore Mahbubani, former Dean of Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at National University of Singapore; Douglas Flint, Special Envoy to the Belt and Road Initiative of the HM Treasury's Financial and Professional Services of the United Kingdom; and Justin Yifu Lin, former Senior Vice President of World Bank. Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu chaired the meeting.

The meeting discussed such topics as the implementation of the outcomes of the 2nd BRF and the promotion of high-quality Belt and Road cooperation. Members of the Advisory Council appreciated the progress made in the Belt and Road cooperation and spoke highly of the principle of extensive consultation, joint efforts and shared benefits, the approach of open, green and clean cooperation, and the pursuit of high standard, people-centered and sustainable development, which are contained in the high-quality Belt and Road cooperation. All members suggested translating the political consensus reached at the 2nd BRF into deliverable outcomes through building high-quality projects, improving Belt and Road cooperation partners' network, promoting global partnership on connectivity, contributing to world economic growth, fostering an open world economy, and further accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

The Advisory Council, as a non-profit international policy advisory body, is to provide intellectual support to the BRF. Members of the Advisory Council participate in activities of the council in their personal capacity. During the 2nd BRF in 2019, the Advisory Council submitted a report on the findings and recommendations entitled Belt and Road: For a Better World, which was included in the list of outcomes of the 2nd BRF.

Yang Jiechi, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, met with members of the Advisory Council.
