The Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Lodges Stern Representations with BBC over Fake News Related to China

2021/03/19

Recently, a responsible official of the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has lodged stern representations with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Beijing office over news reports such as "forced labor" involving Xinjiang and China "curtailing press freedom" made by BBC World News, as well as a report titled "The Disinformation Dragon" by BBC Radio 4.

The official of the Information Department pointed out, BBC holds a strong ideological bias in its China-related reports, and has repeatedly hyped up false information on topics related to Xinjiang, COVID-19 and Hong Kong, and even fabricated fake news. The Foreign Ministry and the Chinese Embassy in the UK have lodged stern representations with the BBC and its Beijing office on many occasions. Instead of correcting its mistakes, BBC has gone even further to attack and smear China over topics related to Xinjiang, so-called "press freedom" and "false information", which has seriously misled the audience, seriously violated the principles of fairness and impartiality in news reporting, and caused adverse impacts. The Chinese side expresses strong dissatisfaction with and firm opposition to such behavior.

The official of the Information Department emphasized that BBC's repeated false reports about China have been strongly opposed by the Chinese people, urging it to take China's stern representations seriously, abandon its anti-China ideological bias and double standards, stop slandering, smearing and attacking China, and report on China in an objective, fair and accurate manner.
