2005/07/19

Chinese President Hu Jintao and President Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania exchanged letters of congratulation warmly cerebrating the 40th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic ties on July 19 2005.

In the letter of congratulation, Hu said that the two peoples of China and Mauritania enjoy profound traditional friendship. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties 40 years ago, bilateral relations have been developing smoothly with the concerted efforts of both sides. The exchanges and cooperation in such areas as politics, trade, economy, culture and education have scored productive results. Both sides have supported and conducted close coordination with each other in international affairs. The friendly relationship between China and Mauritania can be cited as the model of friendly co-existence and mutually beneficial cooperation between developing nations.

"In the new historical context, I would like to join hands with Your Excellency to inherit and carry forward the bilateral traditional friendship and further strengthen the mutually beneficial cooperation in all fields so as to create a more beautiful future for our friendly cooperative relations and benefit our two countries and peoples."

In the letter of congratulation, Taya said that although Mauritania and China are located afar, the friendly relationship built on the basis of full trust and mutual respect since the establishment of diplomatic ties 40 years ago has witnessed constant consolidation and development and the cordial cooperation in all fields has yielded fruitful results. Our two friendly nations both advocate the principle of peace, security and fairness in international relations. I believe that this will always be the solid foundation for the special bilateral relationship. We will continue as always to commit ourselves to strengthening and developing Mauritania-China relationship.

On the same day, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council exchanged letters of congratulation with his Mauritanian counterpart Sghair Ould M'Bareck and Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing exchanged letters of congratulation with Mohamed Vail Ould Belial, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Co-operation of Mauritania.
