Wang Yi: Three Issues Should Be Properly Handled to Address the Afghan Situation

2013/11/11

During the joint meeting with the journalists after the attendance of the 12th Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of China, Russia and India on Nov. 10, 2013, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that three issues should be properly handled to address the Afghan situation.

Wang Yi said that Afghanistan is a friendly neighbor of China. We want to see a safe, stable, united and developing Afghanistan. We always respect Afghanistan's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity and respect the development path chosen by the Afghan people according to their national conditions. We have also been actively involved in Afghanistan's peaceful reconstruction and have provided Afghanistan with assistance to our best abilities.

Wang Yi said that Afghanistan is at a critical transition period. The Afghan people should work together and the international community also need to lend a helping hand. I think that three issues should be properly handled: first, to ensure the smooth conduct of elections in Afghanistan and achieve a smooth transition, which is in line with the common interests of Afghanistan and the international community; second, to support the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned political reconciliation process; third, to support the United Nations to play an important role in coordinating international efforts on assistance to Afghanistan.

Wang Yi said that in 2014 China will host the Fourth Foreign Ministerial Conference of the Istanbul Process on Afghanistan in Tianjin. China is willing to make greater contributions to the peace and development of Afghanistan and the region through this conference.
