Yu Zhengsheng Pays an Official Goodwill Visit to Sri Lanka

On April 8, 2017 local time, at the invitation of Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka, Chairman of National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Yu Zhengsheng paid an official goodwill visit to Sri Lanka from April 6 to 8, and met respectively with President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, and held talks with Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya.

Yu Zhengsheng conveyed the warm greetings from President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Keqiang and Chairman Zhang Dejiang to the leaders of Sri Lanka.

Yu Zhengsheng said in the meeting with Maithripala Sirisena that China and Sri Lanka are traditional friendly neighbors, and the two peoples enjoy a long history in exchanges. Since the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations, China and Sri Lanka have always supported each other on issues concerning respective core and major interests, and bilateral mutually beneficial cooperation has brought tangible benefits to the two peoples. President Xi Jinping paid a state visit to Sri Lanka in 2014, and the Sri Lankan leaders also visited China, thus leaders of both countries jointly made a strategic planning for the development of bilateral relations. Both sides should take the 60th anniversary of the establishment of China-Sri Lanka diplomatic relations as an opportunity to further implement the consensus reached by leaders of both states, maintain high-level exchanges, deepen political mutual trust, integrate development strategies, jointly construct the "Belt and Road", enhance people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and consolidate the public opinion foundation of bilateral friendship, in a bid to push China-Sri Lanka strategic cooperative partnership for constant development.

Maithripala Sirisena expressed that Sri Lanka and China enjoy a long-standing friendship, and the two peoples enjoy a long history in friendly exchanges. China provided Sri Lanka with great support to realize peace and boost the economy. The Sri Lankan people love and respect China. At present, the development of bilateral relations has stepped into a new stage. Sri Lanka will continue to firmly uphold the one-China policy, and looks forward to maintaining close high-level exchanges , expanding and deepening economic and trade cooperation, and strengthening cooperation and coordination in international affairs with China.

During the meeting with Ranil Wickremesinghe, Yu Zhengsheng said that in recent years, bilateral relations have developed in an all-around way, increasingly deepened practical cooperation, and made positive progress in major projects cooperation. Both sides should give play to respective advantages, tap cooperation potentials, jointly construct the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, steadily advance the cooperation in such major projects as the Colombo Port City and the Port of Hambantota, speed up the negotiation on bilateral free trade, and constantly expand maritime affairs, tourism, production capacity and other new cooperation fields, so as to achieve mutual benefit and win-win results and common development.

Ranil Wickremesinghe expressed that he thanked China for offering support and assistance to the modernization construction of Sri Lanka. At present, Sri Lanka is in the progress of industrialization, modernization and urbanization, and looks forward to enhancing cooperation with China in trade, finance, port, transportation infrastructure construction and other fields, and jointly constructing the "Belt and Road", so as to accelerate the economic development of Sri Lanka and advance the regional economic integration.

In the talks with Karu Jayasuriya, Yu Zhengsheng said that he is pleased to see that a stable society, developing economy and increasingly improved living standard in Sri Lanka. The CPPCC is willing to enhance exchanges and cooperation with the Parliament of Sri Lanka to make contributions to deepening bilateral relations and promoting bilateral cooperation.

Karu Jayasuriya expressed that Sri Lanka and China enjoy close exchanges among all walks of life, and bilateral cooperation are facing favorable development prospects. The Parliament of Sri Lanka supports the "Belt and Road" initiative, supports the two sides to conduct free trade negotiation, and looks forward to carrying out more friendly exchanges with China.

During the visit, Yu Zhengsheng and President Maithripala Sirisena jointly attended the foundation stone laying ceremony of the clinic building of National Hospital of Sri Lanka which was funded by China.

Yu Zhengsheng and Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya jointly attended the reception marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of China-Sri Lanka diplomatic relations and respectively delivered speeches. They highly appraised the traditional friendship between the two countries and actively looked into the prospects of bilateral cooperation. Yu Zhengsheng went to the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall which was funded by China in the 1970s of last century, and met with descendants of former Minister for Trade and Industry Dudley Shelton Senanayake, who signed the Agreement on Rice for Rubber with China on behalf of Sri Lanka 65 years ago.

Yu Zhengsheng also inspected the South Container Terminal of Colombo Port and the Colombo Port City which was constructed by China Merchants Group and China Communications Construction Company. He asked Chinese enterprises to earnestly implement the national policies and guidelines into practical work, "go global" more actively, carry forward the spirit of arduous struggle, give play to technical advantages, conduct projects construction and management with high quality and at high level, well tell Chinese stories, and make efforts to achieve the mutual benefit and win-win results as well as the common development between China and relevant countries.

Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC and Chairman of the Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League Lin Wenyi, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the National Committee of the CPPCC Zhang Qingli were present at the above activities.
