On March 29, 2018 local time, Special Representative of President Xi Jinping, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Yang Jiechi held talks in Seoul with National Security Adviser Chung Eui-yong of the Republic of Korea (ROK).

Yang Jiechi expressed that China and the ROK are friendly neighboring countries and bilateral relations have maintained the momentum of improvement and development recently. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of China-ROK strategic cooperative partnership. Both sides should take it as an opportunity to actively implement the important consensus reached by President Xi Jinping and President Moon Jae-in, enhance political communication, promote the joint building of the “Belt and Road”, deepen practical cooperation, increase people-to-people and cultural exchanges and properly deal with sensitive issues, so as to push forward bilateral relations for constant and new outcomes and benefit the people of the two countries.

Briefing Chung Eui-yong on the situation of the visit of the top leader Kim Jong-un of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) to China a few days ago, Yang Jiechi expressed that there have been positive changes of the current Korean Peninsula situation and the international community should make efforts to continue and consolidate the momentum. China expects the smooth holding of the summit between the heads of the ROK and the DPRK as well as between the heads of the DPRK and the United States (US). China stands ready to strengthen communication and coordination with the ROK, make joint efforts to further ease the Korean Peninsula situation and combine China’s “dual-track” approach and beneficial suggestions of all sides to promote the process of political settlement of the Korean Peninsula issue.

Chung Eui-yong expressed that after the visit of President Moon Jae-in to China last December, bilateral relations have developed rapidly. The ROK is willing to enhance bilateral high-level exchanges, deepen cooperation in various fields and intensify non-governmental exchanges in accordance with the consensus of the two heads of state, in a bid to push forward ROK-China strategic cooperative partnership for greater development. Chung Eui-yong expressed that the ROK speaks highly of China’s successful reception of Kim Jong-un’s visit to the country and the meeting between the leaders of China and the DPRK a few days ago. China has always supported the dialogue on the Korean Peninsula between the ROK and the DPRK, advocated the contact between the US and the DPRK, and played a positive role in the recent gratifying changes emerging in the Korean Peninsula situation. The ROK highly commends and deeply appreciates such gestures. The ROK expects that China will continue playing an important role in the Korean Peninsula issue, and stands ready to, together with China, make efforts to promote the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and safeguard regional peace and stability.
