China and India Hold the 17th Meeting of Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on Border Affairs

On July 24, 2020, Director-General of the Department of Boundary and Ocean Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Hong Liang and Joint Secretary of the East Asia Division of the Ministry of External Affairs Naveen Srivastava of India co-chaired the 17th meeting of Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on China-India Border Affairs through video link. Representatives from both countries' departments related to diplomacy, national defense and immigration attended the meeting. Both sides had candid and in-depth exchanges of views on the recent developments in the China-India border areas, and fully affirmed the progress made by the two countries' front-line border defense troops to disengage and deescalate the situation.

The two sides stressed to follow the important consensus reached by the Foreign Ministers and the special representatives on border issue of the two countries to maintain dialogue and consultation both at the diplomatic and military level, properly handle the remaining issues on the spot, and further cool down the border situation. The two sides agreed to continue to hold meetings of Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination On China-India Border Affairs and the commander-level meeting of the border defense troops to enhance confidence-building measures in border areas and jointly safeguard peace and stability of the border areas.
