China Chairs the Extended Troika Meeting on Afghan Issue

On March 31, 2022, the Extended Troika Meeting on Afghan Issue was held in Tunxi, Anhui Province. Before the meeting, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a collective meeting with Special Envoy for Afghan Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China Yue Xiaoyong, Russian Special Presidential Representative for Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov, State Department's Special Representative for Afghanistan of the United States Thomas West and Prime Minister's Special Representative on Afghanistan Affairs of Pakistan Mohammad Sadiq. At the meeting, the representatives of the four sides exchanged in-depth views on the current situation in Afghanistan and how to strengthen collaboration related to Afghanistan, and held a dialogue with Acting Minister of Mines and Petroleum of the Afghan Interim Government Sheikh Shahabuddin Delawar.

The four sides agreed that a peaceful and stable Afghanistan is in the common interests of the international community. Afghanistan should not become a place for geopolitical rivalry, but a platform for international cooperation. The four sides reiterated their firm support for the Afghan people and stressed that more humanitarian assistance will be provided to Afghanistan. All parties in Afghanistan are called on to realize national reconciliation through substantive dialogue and negotiation, and work for a broader, more inclusive and united political architecture in Afghanistan in the future. The four sides stressed that various terrorist forces entrenched in Afghanistan remain a threat to the security of the region, and called on relevant Afghan parties to take more visible measures to fulfill their counter-terrorism commitment and dismantle and eliminate all types of terrorist groups. All sides are encouraged to work together with Afghanistan through commercial and market-oriented means such as economic and trade investment, connectivity and infrastructure construction to improve the level of practical cooperation and help Afghanistan improve its capacity for self-reliant development and achieve economic independence.

The participants highly appreciated China's holding of a series of foreign ministers' meetings among neighboring countries of Afghanistan, including the Extended Troika Meeting on Afghan Issue, and fully recognized China's constructive role in Afghanistan-related issues. The representative of the Afghan Interim Government said that the Afghan side is committed to stabilizing the situation, delivering security to the people, developing the economy, improving people's livelihood, and actively promoting a full range of social undertakings, including education, and hopes that the outside world will continue to provide assistance for Afghanistan. Afghanistan will honor its commitment to the international community and resolutely not allow any terrorist forces to use Afghan territory to undermine other countries.

Special Envoy Yue Xiaoyong also held bilateral meetings with special representatives of Russia, Pakistan and the United States respectively and exchanged views on the Afghan issue and issues of common concerns with them.
