Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Korean Peninsula Affairs Liu Xiaoming Visits EU Headquarters

On 22 April 2022, Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Korean Peninsula Affairs Liu Xiaoming met separately with Deputy Secretary-General Enrique Mora and Managing Director for Asia and the Pacific Gunnar Wiegand of the European External Action Service (EEAS) in Brussels. The two sides exchanged views on the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

Liu Xiaoming shared China’s position on the Korean Peninsula issue. He said that relevant parties should be cautious with their words and actions and work together to keep the situation under control and safeguard peace and stability on the Peninsula. China supports relevant parties in addressing their respective concerns through meaningful dialogue. We hope that the EU will hold an objective and impartial position, properly handle sensitive issues, and play a constructive role on the Peninsula issue.

Mora and Wiegand expressed EU’s support for resolving the Peninsula issue peacefully through diplomatic dialogue. They said that the EU values China’s important role in addressing the Peninsula issue and is ready to strengthen communication and cooperation with China to push forward the process of political settlement of the Peninsula issue.

On the same day, Liu Xiaoming attended a roundtable at the renowned local think tank European Institute for Asian Studies, where he had an exchange with EU experts and scholars over the Korean Peninsula situation and other issues of mutual interest.
