Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Korean Peninsula Affairs Liu Xiaoming Exchanges Views with Officials of the British Foreign Office over the Situation on the Korean Peninsula

On 26 April, Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Korean Peninsula Affairs Liu Xiaoming met with Minister of State Amanda Milling and Second Permanent Under-Secretary Tim Barrow of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the United Kingdom in London. The two sides exchanged views on the situation on the Korean Peninsula and other issues of mutual interest. Minister Yang Xiaoguang of the Chinese Embassy to the UK attended the meetings.

Liu Xiaoming expounded China’s position on the Korean Peninsula issue, shared China’s analysis of the current situation and pointed out that dialogue and consultation are the only viable solution to the Peninsula issue. He called on all parties to stay cool-headed, exercise restraint and avoid taking actions that could further escalate tensions, and hoped that  the UK would play a constructive role for the political settlement of the Peninsula issue.

The British side affirmed its commitment to peace, stability and denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, agreed that the issue should be peacefully resolved through dialogue and consultation, said that it values the important role of China in addressing the Peninsula issue, and expressed readiness to enhance communication with China on this matter.

On the same day, Liu Xiaoming exchanged views with British Ambassador to China Caroline Wilson and British Ambassador to the DPRK David Ellis over the Korean Peninsula situation and issues of shared interest.
