On 26 July 2022, Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Korean Peninsula Affairs Liu Xiaoming answered a phone call from Kim Gunn, Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea (ROK). The two sides exchanged views on the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

Liu Xiaoming pointed out that the root cause of the current stalemate on the Korean Peninsula is that DPRK’s steps toward denuclearization and its legitimate and reasonable concerns have not received the response they deserve. He expressed the hope for parties concerned to exercise restraint and work together to address each other’s concerns in a balanced way. He stressed that China has always supported the ROK and the DPRK in improving their relations and is willing to maintain communication with the ROK to jointly promote the political settlement of the Peninsula issue.

Kim Gunn shared the ROK’s views and considerations. He said that the ROK values China’s important role in addressing the Peninsula issue and is prepared to strengthen communication and cooperation with China.
