OPCW Director-General Fernando Arias and Its Executive Council Delegation Pay Virtual Visit to China

On September 15, 2022, Director-General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Fernando Arias, Chair of OPCW Executive Council Ziyad Bin Maashi Al-Attiyah as well as permanent diplomatic envoys or representatives of Russia, Malaysia, Kenya, Cameroon, Mexico, Brunei, the United States, Germany and other countries to the OPCW paid a virtual visit to China regarding the destruction of Japan's abandoned chemical weapons (ACWs) in China. Director-General of the Department of Arms Control of the Foreign Ministry Fu Cong, Director of the Office for the Disposal of Japan's Abandoned Chemical Weapons in China Dong Fengming, Director of the Office of Arms Control and Implementation Affairs of the Office for International Military Cooperation of the Central Military Commission Guo Hongtao, among others, participated in the event.

During the visit, all the participants were briefed by China and Japan on the overall situation and destruction progress of Japan's ACWs in China, took a virtue visit to Haerbaling, Dunhua City, Jilin Province, the largest burial site of Japan's ACWs in China, and had an in-depth exchange of views on accelerating the destruction process. China demands that Japan earnestly fulfill its obligations as the country that abandoned the chemical weapons, and comprehensively, completely and thoroughly destroy its ACWs in China at an early date. All parties support accelerating the destruction process of Japan's ACWs in accordance with the provisions of the Chemical Weapons Convention, and will work for the early realization of "a world free of chemical weapons".
