China and the UAE Hold the First Meeting of the Consultation Mechanism on Counterterrorism and Deradicalization Cooperation

On September 12, 2022, External Security Commissioner of the Foreign Ministry Cheng Guoping held the first meeting of the consultation mechanism on counterterrorism and deradicalization cooperation with Chairman of the International Center of Excellence for Countering Violent Extremism (Hedayah) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ali Al Nuaimi in the UAE. Representatives from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Public Security, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and Jinan University, with representatives from Hedayah of the UAE, attended the meeting.

The two sides had an in-depth exchange of views on the current international and regional counterterrorism situations, the counterterrorism situation of respective countries, counterterrorism security concerns and measures, and the China-UAE cooperation on counterterrorism and deradicalization, among others, and reached wide-ranging common grounds. The spokesperson of the People's Government of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Elijan Anayat briefed the meeting the counterterrorism and deradicalization measures in Xinjiang and the effects. Representatives of victims of terrorism from Xinjiang shared their personal experiences and feelings of terrorist attacks and were very well received. Commissioner Cheng Guoping also briefed the meeting on his recent attendance at the UN Global Congress of Victims of Terrorism. The two sides agreed to hold the second meeting of the mechanism in Beijing in due course.

During his visit in the UAE, Commissioner Cheng and the delegation also met with H.H. Sheikh Al Murr bin Juma Al Maktoum, an important member of the Dubai royal family, and Salem Mohammed Al Zaabi, Director of the International Security Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the UAE. They exchanged views on bilateral relations and issues of common interest and concern. He was also for a talk with the compatriots from Xinjiang. Commissioner Cheng, together with Abudurehap Tumuniyaz, President of Xinjiang Islamic Association and President of Xinjiang Islamic Institute, exchanged ideas on the religion management and other topics with Director of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center and Chairman of the World Muslim Communities Council.
