Chinese Foreign Ministry Makes All-out Efforts to Handle the Incident of Shipwreck in Cambodia

On September 22, 2022, a fishing boat carrying Chinese nationals sank off Cambodia's sea. Upon learning the accident, the Chinese Foreign Ministry immediately activated the emergency mechanism for consular protection and deployed the Chinese Embassy in Cambodia to conduct the search and rescue operations and emergency response. The officials in charge of the relevant departments of the Chinese Foreign Ministry soon made urgent contact with the Cambodian Embassy in China, stressing that life comes first, asked the Cambodian side to do its utmost to mobilize all resources, spare no time and make every effort to search and rescue the people overboard, and properly settle the rescued. They asked the Cambodian side to thoroughly investigate the cause of the incident and take effective measures to prevent the tragedy from happening again. The Cambodian side said that the Cambodian government attaches great importance to the incident, will do its best to carry out search and rescue and investigation work, and keep the Chinese side updated on any progress.

The Chinese Embassy in Cambodia has set up a special task force to the site to coordinate the rescue work.

So far, 21 people have been rescued.
