Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre Meets with Special Representative Liu Yuxi of the Chinese Government on African Affairs

On December 6, 2022, Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre met with Special Representative Liu Yuxi of the Chinese Government on African Affairs at the Office of Prime Minister. The two sides exchanged views on bilateral relations and issues of mutual interest and concern.

Liu Yuxi said that China-Somalia relations have maintained a sound momentum of development for a long time. China appreciates Somalia’s firm support for the one-China principle, and supports Somalia’s efforts to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, restore the economy and improve people’s livelihood. China is ready to take the 62nd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Somalia as an opportunity to work with Somalia to further deepen political mutual trust, step up coordination and cooperation in international affairs, and work for more practical cooperation results. Liu also briefed the Somali side on the important outcomes of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), saying that China will stay committed to its fundamental national policy of opening to the outside world and pursue a mutually beneficial strategy of opening up to provide new opportunities for the development of African countries.

Barre extended warm congratulations on Xi Jinping’s re-election as General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee. Barre said that the Somali side thanks China for its valuable support for the country’s stability and economic development, and hopes that China will continue to play an important role in the process of Somali national rejuvenation. Somalia will always be a good friend of China, firmly support the one-China principle, strengthen cooperation with China in bilateral and multilateral fields, and safeguard common interests.

During his visit, Liu Yuxi also met with Somali Foreign Minister Abshir Omar Huruse. The two sides agreed to carry forward the traditional friendship between the two countries and work for greater development of China-Somalia relations.
