2014/05/28

On May 26, 2014, Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin met with UN Under-Secretary-General and Legal Counsel Miguel de Serpa Soares at request. Both sides exchanged views on further strengthening the cooperation between China and the UN in the field of international law.

Liu extended welcome to Soares for his visit to Beijing to attend the International Law Colloquium Commemorating the 60th Anniversary of “the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence”. He stressed that in international relations China has always abided by the UN Charter and the fundamental principles of international law and actively participated in the process of international rule of law. For many years, China has maintained sound cooperation with the UN Office of Legal Affairs and has provided full support in its power. He hoped that both sides could take further practical measures, intensify cooperation efforts and expand cooperation fields.

Soares appreciated the invitation of the Chinese side and spoke highly of the positive and constructive efforts that China has made in the international affairs. He stands ready to discuss further cooperation with the Chinese side at any time and expects the Chinese side to play a more important role in the process of the construction of international rule of law.

The two sides also exchanged views on international topics of common interest.
