Vice Foreign Minister Kong Xuanyou Talks about Korean Peninsula Situation with the ROK

On January 5, 2018, Vice Foreign Minister and Special Representative of the Chinese Government for Korean Peninsula Affairs Kong Xuanyou met respectively with First Vice Foreign Minister Lim Sung Nam of the Republic of Korea (ROK), and Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and chief representative for six-party talks Lee Do-hoon of the ROK in Seoul, exchanging in-depth views on the Korean Peninsula situation and other topics.

Both sides agreed that they should implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries during President Moon Jae-in's visit to China, deepen political mutual trust, strengthen strategic communication, promote exchanges and cooperation, and continue properly handling sensitive issues, so as to push forward the steady development of bilateral relations.

Regarding the Korean Peninsula situation, both sides agreed that they should adhere to the goal of denuclearization of the Peninsula, safeguard peace and stability on the Peninsula, and remain committed to resolving the issue through dialogue and consultation. Both China and the ROK will strengthen communication and cooperation to this end. Kong Xuanyou expressed that China welcomes and supports the efforts of the ROK and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to engage in contact and dialogue by taking the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics as an opportunity, improve their mutual relations and ease the Peninsula situation. Under the current situation, all relevant parties should meet each other half way and do more things conducive to easing the tension, strengthening mutual trust and resuming dialogue. The ROK expressed that the country will make positive efforts to resume and promote dialogue between the ROK and the DPRK so as to make the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics as an opportunity to improve their relations.
