External Security Commissioner of the Foreign Ministry Cheng Guoping Attends the 3rd Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO)-Afghanistan Contact Group Meeting at Vice Foreign Ministerial Level

From April 18 to 19, 2019, the 3rd Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO)-Afghanistan Contact Group Meeting at Vice Foreign Ministerial Level was held in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. External Security Commissioner of the Foreign Ministry Cheng Guoping led a delegation to attend the meeting. Representatives of other member states and permanent bodies of the SCO and Afghanistan attended the meeting.

All parties present at the meeting exchanged views on the situation in Afghanistan and the region, Afghanistan’s reconciliation process and the strengthening of cooperation between the SCO and Afghanistan. Cheng Guoping elaborated on the Chinese side’s principled stance on the Afghan issue, introduced the Chinese side’s efforts to promote the peaceful reconstruction of Afghanistan, and suggested that all parties firmly carry forward the “Shanghai Spirit”, give full play to the role of the SCO-Afghanistan Contact Group, and promote cooperation between the SCO and Afghanistan in various fields in a solid manner, thereby making SCO contributions to peace, stability, development and prosperity in Afghanistan and the region.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Cheng Guoping also held bilateral meetings respectively with Russia’s Special Presidential Envoy to the SCO and Russia’s National Coordinator in the SCO Bakhtier Khakimov, Uzbekistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Ismatulla Irgashev, and Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Idrees Zaman of Afghanistan.
