2020/06/03

On June 2, 2020, Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng held telephone conversation via video link with Secretary General for the European External Action Service Helga Schmid, exchanging views on China-European Union (EU) relations, cooperation in COVID-19 response and relevant international and regional issues.

Le Yucheng said, the pandemic has changed the world in a profound way as it leads to severe economic recession of countries around the globe, impacts the social order and impedes international cooperation. China and the EU should stay united, enhance bilateral and multilateral cooperation in pandemic containment, and support multilateralism and the work of the World Health Organization. Both sides also need to improve global governance and jointly oppose the politicization of the pandemic. The Chinese side is prepared to work with the EU side to ensure the success of this year’s major diplomatic agenda between both sides, actively advance dialogues and cooperation in various fields, and work together to cope with climate changes and other global challenges.

Helga Schmid expressed, in the fight against the pandemic, the EU and China have supported and helped each other, and jointly promoted international cooperation in COVID-19 containment. As this year is an important year for EU-China relations, both sides should ensure substantial progress in cooperation in key areas and push for more achievements in EU-China high-level exchanges this year.
