On June 4, 2020, Vice Foreign Minister Qin Gang spoke on the phone with Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Elisabetta Belloni of Italy.

Qin Gang said, China and Italy have conducted a series of collaborations in fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic. The touching stories from the two countries on fighting against the pandemic together have set a role model of defeating the COVID-19 outbreak for the world. It is hoped that the two sides will join hands to support World Health Organization (WHO) in playing its leading and coordinating role, maintain international public health security, and jointly build a community of health for all. The pandemic will not change China's determination to deepen opening-up and international cooperation. The Chinese side is willing to work hand in hand with the Italian side to take the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries as an opportunity to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in various fields including trade and investment, promote the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative for more tangible results, and boost China-Italy relations and China-European Union (EU) relations for greater development.

Elisabetta Belloni said, at this critical moment of Italy's fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, China promptly lends a helping hand and gives precious support to Italy in controlling the pandemic and saving lives. The pandemic is a major global public health crisis. Only by pooling the strength of all parties and carrying out international cooperation, can we effectively respond to the pandemic. The Italian side supports the work of WHO and attaches importance to developing Italy-China relations. Italy is willing to enhance high-level exchanges and deepen cooperation with China in economy, trade, science, technology, tourism and other fields, contributing to the advancement of EU-China relations.
