2020/11/17

On November 16, 2020, Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu attended the 31st APEC Ministerial Meeting (AMM) which was convened virtually.

Ma Zhaoxu said, the world is experiencing major changes unseen in a century, and the novel coronavirus is raging through the globe and exerting a far-reaching influence, reversing the trend of economic globalization, dragging the world economy into a downturn, causing in-depth corrections in the international pattern and exposing the Asia-Pacific region to more challenges and risks in the future. Upholding the concept that the Asia-Pacific region is a community with a shared future, APEC members should deepen solidarity and cooperation and carry on the momentum of economic cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region to jointly tackle common challenges and benefit people in the region. First, APEC members should develop a post-2020 vision, remain committed to the purpose and principles of APEC cooperation, continue to enable the "two wheels" of trade and investment as well as economic and technical cooperation to function well, further promote the key agenda of APEC, and charter the course of Asia-Pacific development. Second, APEC members should strengthen cooperation in areas such as facilitating personnel exchanges, medical and health care, and stability of supply chain, and work jointly to address the challenges of the pandemic and promote economic recovery. Third, APEC members should seize the opportunities of the digital economy, build an open, fair and non-discriminatory business environment, tap the potential of the digital economy, and drive innovative, inclusive and sustainable growth. China is willing to work with all parties and play a positive and constructive role to allow the upcoming leaders' meeting to achieve positive results and contribute to the future development and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region.

Ma Zhaoxu said, the 5th plenary session of the 19th CPC Central Committee has been successfully held and drawn a blueprint for China's future development. China will adhere to the new development concept, promote high-quality development, drive itself toward larger, wider and deeper level opening up, and advance building of a new development pattern to bring greater opportunities to the Asia-Pacific region and better benefit the people in the region.

Focusing on anti-pandemic and economic recovery, the AMM discussed in depth on such topics as trade and investment, inclusive & sustainable growth, summed up the achievements of cooperation in each field throughout the year, and made preparations for the forthcoming 27th APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting. A Joint Ministerial Statement was issued at the AMM.
