China and Japan Hold the Dialogue Between the Heads of the Delegations of High-level Consultations on Maritime Affairs

On January 20, 2021, Director-General of the Department of Boundary and Ocean Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Hong Liang and Director-General of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan Takehiro Funakoshi co-chaired the dialogue between the heads of the delegations of China-Japan high-level consultations on maritime affairs via video link.

The two sides stressed that both countries should fully implement the consensus reached by the heads of two countries and the four-point consensus, enhance communication through China-Japan high-level consultations on maritime affairs and other bilateral channels, and promote practical cooperation in the maritime field, making the East China Sea a sea of peace, cooperation and friendship. China reiterated its principled stance on the Diaoyu Islands, and expressed its concerns to the Japanese side. China hopes that the two sides could meet each other half way, manage differences through dialogues, and effectively maintain the stability and peace of the East China Sea.
