Special Envoy of the Chinese Government on the Middle East Issue Zhai Jun Gives a Joint Interview to Chinese Media

On February 26, 2021, Special Envoy of the Chinese Government on the Middle East Issue Zhai Jun gave a joint interview to Chinese media including People's Daily, Xinhua News Agency and China Media Group at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Zhai Jun introduced the cooperation between China and countries in the Middle East. He said that during the past year, in the context of once-in-a-century pandemic, profound changes unseen in a hundred years, serious global economic recession and turbulence and transformations of the world, China maintained healthy and stable development in the relationship with countries in the region, setting a good example of South-South cooperation. Both sides enhanced political mutual trust and assisted each other in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, and realized mutual benefit and win-win results in practical cooperation and collective cooperation. In the new year, China will sustain the momentum of high-level exchanges with countries in the region, deepen vaccine cooperation, support the resumption of work and production in these countries, and jointly promote equality, mutual learning, dialogue and mutual accommodation between civilizations.

Zhai Jun pointed out that Xinjiang-related issues are not about ethnicity, religion or human rights at all, but about combating violence, terrorism, extremism and separatism. Xinjiang enjoys social stability, with the people living and working in peace and contentment. The region has made unprecedented achievements in economic and social development and improvement of people's livelihood. The measures of combating terrorism and extremism in Xinjiang have been widely recognized by the international community, including Arabic and Islamic countries.

Zhai Jun also stated China's stance on the situation in the Middle East and hotspot issues of the region. He said that peace and security of the Middle East bear on the fundamental interests of countries in the region, and concern global stability and development. It is in the common interest of the international community to de-escalate the tensions and safeguard regional security and stability. In terms of the Iranian issue, China supports the full and effective implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). It is imperative to bring the JCPOA back on the right track as soon as possible. As to the security of the Persian Gulf region, China calls on building a multilateral dialogue platform for the Persian Gulf region on the basis of preserving the JCPOA, to manage the crisis through collective consultation, and reach new consensus on maintaining peace and stability of the region. On the Palestinian question, China will continue to adhere to the general direction of the two-state solution, and work with the international community to achieve a comprehensive and just settlement of the Palestinian question on the basis of the relevant United Nations resolutions and the principle of land for peace. About the Syrian issue, China believes that the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria should be upheld and respected, the future of Syria should be independently decided by its people and the Syrian issue should be settled by political means.
