Telephone Conversation Between Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Korean Peninsula Affairs Amb. Liu Xiaoming and Director-General of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau of MOFA Japan, Head of the Japanese Delegation to Six-Party Talks Mr. Funakoshi Takehiro

On September 15, Amb. Liu Xiaoming, Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Korean Peninsula Affairs had a telephone conversation with Mr. Funakoshi Takehiro, Director-General of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau of MOFA Japan and head of the Japanese delegation to Six-Party Talks. They exchanged views about the situation on the Korean Peninsula and other issues of mutual interest.

Amb. Liu stated China's principled positions on the Korean Peninsula, and called on Japan to send more positive signals and be more constructive in this regard. He urged Japan to adhere to principles of the four Sino-Japanese political documents, and refrain from taking actions that harm China's interests and Sino-Japan mutual trust, so as to create conditions for the two sides to enhance communication and cooperation on the Korean Peninsula Issues.

Mr. Funakoshi said that his country values relations with China, and spoke highly of China's important role on the Peninsula Issues. He briefed Amb. Liu on earlier consultations among Japan, the ROK and the US on the matter. He said that Japan welcomes actions that help restart dialogues, and is willing to contribute to the political settlement of the Peninsula Issues.
