On August 14, 2024 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with former Chairman of Myanmar's State Peace and Development Council Than Shwe in Nay Pyi Taw.

Than Shwe asked Wang Yi to convey his sincere greetings to President Xi Jinping. He said that he was glad to see China's remarkable development achievements and thanked China for its long-term selfless support and assistance to Myanmar in all aspects. China is Myanmar's "pauk-phaw" brother and friendly neighbor. The two countries have always been friendly to each other and lived in peace, which will never change. Than Shwe expressed his hope that China will continue to provide valuable support to help Myanmar prevent external interference and maintain domestic stability.

Wang Yi conveyed President Xi Jinping's cordial greetings to Than Shwe. Wang Yi said that Than Shwe, an old friend of the Chinese people, has long been committed to the cause of China-Myanmar friendship. The Chinese side highly appreciates this. The China-Myanmar "pauk-phaw" friendship has withstood the test of the evolving international landscape and grown stronger with time. China has always placed the development of China-Myanmar relations at an important position in its neighborhood diplomacy, and is ready to work with Myanmar to achieve more practical results in building a China-Myanmar community with a shared future. China will, as always, support Myanmar's efforts to safeguard its independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, reach domestic political reconciliation within the constitutional framework, hold national elections smoothly and restart the process of democratic transformation. China firmly opposes foreign interference and infiltration in Myanmar as well as any words and deeds that undermine Myanmar's stability and development. China will uphold the spirit of sharing weal and woe and helping each other, and be a true and good friend that the Myanmar government and people can trust and rely on.
