Noting that China is Myanmar's largest neighbor, Wang Yi said no other country wants Myanmar to restore stability and realize development more than China. On the Myanmar issue, China is committed to respecting Myanmar's sovereignty, independence, national unity and territorial integrity, non-interference in its internal affairs and the Myanmar-owned and Myanmar-led peace process. China supports ASEAN's role as the main channel and hopes that ASEAN's five-point consensus on Myanmar and Myanmar's new five-point roadmap can reinforce each other and be effectively implemented.
Wang Yi said that the Myanmar issue is complex, and the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General on Myanmar plays a unique role and shoulders heavy responsibilities. He expressed the hope that Julie Bishop will have an in-depth understanding of Myanmar's special national conditions and the historical development of the Myanmar issue, uphold an objective and just position, handle relations between all parties in a balanced manner, bear in mind the long-term interests of the Myanmar people, and help the Myanmar side find an effective way to bridge differences. The Chinese side is ready to provide support and assistance to the special envoy in performing her duties and play a constructive role in realizing political reconciliation and lasting peace and stability in Myanmar.
Julie Bishop thanked the Chinese side for receiving her at the very beginning of her term of office. The Myanmar issue is complex and challenging. As an important neighbor of Myanmar and a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, China has a unique influence. She expressed willingness to maintain close communication and strengthen cooperation with China and ASEAN to reach consensus on properly handling the Myanmar issue, end the conflict at an early date, ease the humanitarian situation, and realize lasting peace and prosperity led by the Myanmar people.
