Updated: March 22, 2025 22:52

On March 22, 2025 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya in Tokyo.

Wang Yi said that China and Japan are close neighbors, and the bilateral relationship holds significance that goes beyond the bilateral scope. In the face of an international landscape full of uncertainties, the two sides should deliver on the important common understandings reached between the leaders of the two countries, face history squarely and look to the future, enhance trust, remove suspicion and build consensus, maintain the right direction of bilateral relations, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields, promote steady and long-term bilateral relations, and contribute to peace and prosperity of the two countries and Asia at large.

Wang Yi stressed that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Correctly understanding and treating history is an important prerequisite for Japan's post-war return to the international community, the political foundation for Japan to develop relations with its neighboring countries, and an important criterion for testing whether Japan can abide by its commitment to peaceful development. The four political documents between China and Japan have made clear provisions on history and the Taiwan question, which must be strictly implemented without any ambiguity or regression. The Treaty of Peace and Friendship between China and Japan stipulates that all provisions of the China-Japan Joint Statement should be strictly observed, indicating that the statement, together with the treaty, constitutes the legally binding documents guiding bilateral relations, and it must be observed together without distortion or sabotage. The momentum of improvement in China-Japan relations is hard-earned, and it is particularly crucial to maintain the political foundation of bilateral relations.

Takeshi Iwaya said that in November last year, the leaders of the two countries reached important common understandings on comprehensively advancing the Japan-China strategic relationship of mutual benefit and building constructive and stable Japan-China relations. Based on the consensus, the two sides have made efforts to promote the improvement of bilateral relations. Noting the huge potential for bilateral cooperation, Takeshi Iwaya said Japan is determined and willing to strengthen dialogue and communication with China and further push for more results in cooperation across various fields and bring more benefits to the two peoples. Japan has long followed the path of peaceful development and attaches importance to abiding by the four political documents between Japan and China. Japan's position on the Taiwan question, based on the 1972 Japan-China Joint Statement, remains unchanged. As the international situation is changing rapidly, Japan and China, as responsible countries, should work together to play a positive role in safeguarding regional peace and stability.

The two sides also had a candid and in-depth exchange of views on issues of common interest and concern.
