Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Korean Peninsula Affairs Liu Xiaoming Visits UN Headquarters in New York

From 29 March to 2 April 2022, Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Korean Peninsula Affairs Liu Xiaoming visited the UN Headquarters in New York and held meetings with Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Joyce Msuya and permanent representatives of Security Council member states, including the US, Russia, the UK, France, the UAE, Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana, India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico and Norway, exchanging views on the situation on the Korean Peninsula. Ambassador Dai Bing, Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the UN, attended some of the meetings.

Liu Xiaoming elaborated on China’s principled position on the Korean Peninsula issue and called on relevant parties to stay calm, exercise restraint, resume meaningful dialogue as soon as possible, and explore effective solutions that address all sides’ concerns in a balanced manner. He said that the UN Security Council bears important responsibility for safeguarding international peace and security, hence should further build consensus for political settlement of the Korean Peninsula issue so as to prevent the Peninsula from sliding back into tense confrontation.

USG DiCarlo and ASG Msuya recognized China’s role in dealing with the Korean Peninsula issue and expressed readiness to strengthen cooperation with China to provide humanitarian assistance to the DPRK.

Member states of the Security Council expressed concern over the current situation on the Peninsula. They affirmed that dialogue and consultation are effective means to address the Korean Peninsula issue, and that they will continue to make efforts in this regard.

During his visit in New York, Liu Xiaoming also had separate meetings with the Permanent Representative of the DPRK and the Permanent Representative of the ROK to exchange views on the situation on the Peninsula and issues of mutual concern.
