Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Korean Peninsula Affairs Liu Xiaoming Visits Washington, DC

From 4 April to 7 April 2022, Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Korean Peninsula Affairs Liu Xiaoming visited Washington, DC. He met respectively with Deputy Secretary of State Wendy R. Sherman, Deputy Assistant to the President on the National Security Council, Indo-Pacific Coordinator Kurt Campbell, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel J. Kritenbrink, and Special Representative for the DPRK Sung Kim to exchange views on the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

Liu Xiaoming elaborated on China’s principled position on the Korean Peninsula issue and underscored that given the current situation on the Peninsula, it is most imperative for relevant parties to remain cool-headed, exercise restraint and avoid taking actions that could escalate tensions. The UN Security Council should play a constructive role for the political settlement of the Peninsula issue. Any action it takes should be conducive to deescalation and dialogue, instead of adding fuel to the fire.

Liu Xiaoming also made clear China's position on the Taiwan question. He stated that the Taiwan question concerns China's core interests. If mishandled, it will cause a disruptive impact on China-US relations. The US side should honor its commitment to the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiqueswith real actions.

The US side stated that the US and China have shared interests in maintaining peace and stability on the Peninsula and realizing denuclearization of the Peninsula. The US is willing to strengthen communication and cooperation with China and jointly push forward the political settlement process of the Peninsula issue. There is no change in the US one-China policy.

During his visit, Liu Xiaoming also attended a roundtable with scholars from renowned US think tanks to share China’s views on the Peninsula situation.
