On 5 April 2023, Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Korean Peninsula Affairs Liu Xiaoming visited the headquarters of the European Union and held talks respectively with Deputy Secretary-General Enrique Mora and Managing Director for Asia and the Pacific Gunnar Wiegand of the European External Action Service (EEAS). The two sides exchanged views on the situation on the Korean Peninsula, China-EU relations as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Liu Xiaoming shared China’s policy and position on the Korean Peninsula issue. He stressed that the parties concerned should keep to the direction of political settlement, squarely recognize the crux of the issue, and work to address each other’s concerns, in particular the legitimate concerns of the DPRK, in a balanced manner through meaningful dialogue, so as to maintain regional peace and stability. China is prepared to work with the EU to strengthen communication and cooperation on bilateral and multilateral affairs, advance the development of China-EU relations, jointly uphold multilateralism, respond to regional and global challenges, and promote world peace and development.

Mora and Wiegand said the EU agrees that the Korean Peninsula issue should be peacefully resolved through dialogue, and the EU will keep communication and coordination with China in various fields to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation and jointly safeguard world peace and security.
