Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Eurasian Affairs Li Hui Holds Talks with Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland Wojciech Gerwel

On May 19, 2023, Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Eurasian Affairs Li Hui held talks with Undersecretary of State (Deputy Foreign Minister) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland Wojciech Gerwel in Warsaw. The two sides exchanged views on the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis, China-Poland relations, and other issues.

Li Hui said that an escalating and prolonged Ukraine crisis goes against the interests of all relevant parties. China hopes for an early ceasefire and resumption of peace talks. China’s position on the Ukraine crisis is consistent, and it boils down to supporting talks for peace. Based on China’s Position on the Political Settlement of the Ukraine Crisis, China is ready to strengthen dialogue and communication with all relevant parties to continue expanding common understandings on a political settlement of the crisis, and gradually build consensus and lay a solid foundation for a ceasefire and end of hostilities. Poland is Ukraine’s close neighbor and an important country in Central and Eastern Europe. Noting that China values Poland’s important role in regional affairs, Li Hui said China stands ready to maintain communication with Poland on the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis, and support establishing a balanced, effective and sustainable European security architecture to provide an enduring guarantee for peace in Europe.

Noting the traditional friendship between China and Poland, Li Hui stressed that China is ready to work with Poland to continuously elevate the China-Poland relationship to new heights on the basis of mutual respect, equality, mutual benefit and win-win results.

Gerwel said that Poland has always stayed committed to the one-China principle and stands ready to work with China to promote substantial progress in Poland-China relations. Poland speaks highly of China’s constructive role in international affairs as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, and hopes that China will continue its positive role on the Ukraine issue to ease and cool down the current tensions and realize peace as soon as possible.
