Wang Yi: China and Hungary Should Connect the "Belt and Road" Initiative and "Eastern Opening" Strategy

2015/06/07

On June 6, local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks in Budapest with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto of Hungary. When meeting the press after their talks together, Wang Yi noted that both sides should join efforts to promote the strategic docking between the initiative of the "Belt and Road" put forward by China and the policy of "opening to the East" held by Hungary.

Wang Yi said that China-Hungary relations enjoy a sound development and are now standing at the best period in history. As President Xi Jinping put forward the important initiative of building the "Belt and Road", Chinese economy steps up its efforts in "opening up to the West". Hungary, which pursues a "opening to the East" policy, is a cooperative partner that China attaches great importance to. All of these indicate that the China-Hungary relations will embrace important development opportunities.

In the era of globalization, the Eurasian continent exists as an integral whole, where China and Hungary are located in eastern part and western part respectively. However, the "Belt and Road" initiative brings the two nations closer. Today, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto and I signed the bilateral inter-governmental memorandum of understanding on cooperation in promoting the construction of the "Belt and Road", which is the first such cooperative agreement signed between China and an European country. Hungary plays an leading role in this regard. We welcome more European nations to look to the East, intensify mutually beneficial cooperation with China and other Asian nations, and participate in the construction of the "Belt and Road" in different ways. The history will prove that this will be a wise and right strategic choice.

We hope that China and Hungary could realize an in-depth connection between the development strategies, and enhance policy communication, infrastructure connectivity, trade facilitation, financial integration and people-to-people bonds, so as to achieve common development and prosperity.

We hope that China and Hungary could promote docking of bilateral practical cooperation, deepen cooperation in traditional fields, continuously expand new cooperation sectors, and strengthen coordination and cooperation in promoting cooperation between China and the Central and Eastern European countries as well as the development of China-Europe relations.

We hope that China and Hungary could facilitate the organic connection between the two cultures and civilizations. China and Hungary, both boasting profound cultural connotation, should boost bilateral exchanges and mutual learning in people-to-people and cultural engagement, so as to cement the public opinion foundation for intensifying bilateral relations and deepening practical cooperation.

Wang Yi expressed his expectation that by taking the signing the inter-governmental memorandum of understanding as opportunity, Hungary could become an important pillar of the construction of the "Belt and Road" in Europe; by taking the construction of the Hungary-Serbia Railway as opportunity, Hungary could grow into an important logistics hub in the Eurasian continent; and by taking the enhancement of bilateral high-level mutual trust as opportunity, Hungary could become an important bridge linking the friendship between China and Europe.

Wang Yi said in the end that China-Hungary cooperation is a component of China-Europe cooperation, and it is hoped that China-Hungary relations and China-EU relations could promote each other to realize sound interactions and common development.
