Advisory Committee on International Law of Foreign Ministry Convenes Third Plenary Session

On January 5, 2016, the Advisory Committee on International Law of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs convened the third plenary session in Beijing, which Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin attended and addressed. The meeting was chaired by Director-General of the Department of Treaty and Law of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Xu Hong and attended by fourteen advisors and members of the committee, including former President of the International Court of Justice of the United Nations (UN) Shi Jiuyong.

Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin pointed out that under the new situation, international law plays an increasingly important role in maintaining national interests, promoting and improving global governance mechanism and shaping the image of a responsible state. The Advisory Committee can give play to its expertise in international law to actively offer advice and suggestions for comprehensively pushing major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics. The advisors and committee members at the meeting spoke actively, having a practical and in-depth discussion on the development of the international law, foreign-related legal work, further play of the committee's role and others.

The Advisory Committee, established in January, 2015 and composed of domestic famous experts in international law, mainly provides legal advice, research reports and policy suggestions concerning major diplomatic topics.
