Special Representative of the Chinese Government on African Affairs Zhong Jianhua Co-chairs High-level Meeting of JMEC Partners Group for South Sudan with Foreign Minister of Sudan

On July 31, 2016, Special Representative of the Chinese Government on African Affairs Zhong Jianhua co-chaired the third High-level Meeting of the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC) Partners Group for South Sudan with Foreign Minister Ghandour Ibrahim Ahmed of Sudan in Khartoum. JMEC Chairperson and former President of Botswana Festus Mogae as well as representatives from Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, the US, the UK, the European Union, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and other countries as well as organizations were present at the meeting.

Festus Mogae introduced the latest development of the South Sudan situation and JMEC's work to alleviate the situation and called on the international community to give out a consistent signal to both sides of the conflict in South Sudan, so as to help the country restore stability as soon as possible. All present parties assessed the current situation of South Sudan, reached broad consensus on alleviating the South Sudan situation, and unanimously adopted the statement of the meeting.

The statement strongly condemned the recent armed conflicts in South Sudan that caused casualties of civilians and UN peacekeeping personnel, including Chinese peacekeeping soldiers, and called for an investigation and accountability. It asked both sides of the conflict in South Sudan to immediately cease fire and stop violence, get back to the track of political settlement and the implementation of the peace agreement, ensure the UNMISS and the Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring Mechanism (CTSAMM) to act with freedom in South Sudan, provide unhindered access to humanitarian aid of the international community, and respect and protect the legal rights and interests of international partners in the country.

After the meeting, Special Representative Zhong Jianhua and Foreign Minister Ibrahim Ahmed Ghandour of Sudan jointly gave an interview to local media. Special Representative Zhong Jianhua also gave a separate interview to Xinhua News Agency and China Central Television.
