Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying's Remarks on Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's Comment

2016-08-05 23:21

Q: The Singapore-based Lianhe Zaobao reported that Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said during his visit to the US that the award by the Arbitral Tribunal on the issue of the South China Sea defined, in a powerful way, all countries sovereign claims. As a small country, Singapore hopes that all countries will respect international law and accept the result of arbitration. What is China's comment on that?

A: As was made clear by the Chinese side, the so-called award by the Arbitral Tribunal was illegal and invalid and thus not binding at all. At the recently concluded foreign ministers' meetings on East Asia cooperation, ASEAN enunciated that it took no position on the so-called arbitration case. Foreign ministers from China and ASEAN countries also issued a joint statement on fully and effectively implementing the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea. The Chinese side hopes that Singapore will respect China's position and its consensus with ASEAN, stay objective and impartial, play its role well as the coordinator of China-ASEAN relations and work for the sound the steady growth of China-Singapore as well as China-ASEAN relations.
