Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei's Remarks on the Severe Violence in Vietnam Affecting China-Vietnam Exchanges

2014/05/18

Q: Recent days witnessed severely violent acts against foreign companies and citizens in Vietnam which caused casualties and property losses to Chinese citizens. How will this affect exchanges between China and Vietnam?

A: Since May 13, severely violent acts involving beating, smashing, looting and arson against foreign companies took place in a number of cities in Vietnam, causing death and property losses to Chinese citizens and jeopardizing the climate and conditions for China-Vietnam exchanges and cooperation. Given this fact, China has raised the level of its travel warning for Chinese citizens, advising them not to go to Vietnam for the time being and has suspended some of bilateral exchange plans. China will consider taking further steps depending on how the situation plays out.
