Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei's Regular Press Conference on October 8, 2014

2014/10/08

At the invitation of Vice President Li Yuanchao, Vice President of the Federated States of Micronesia Alik L. Alik will pay an official visit to China from October 13 to 17.

Q: There are reports that the Malaysian Immigration Department detained 155 illegal Chinese Uighur immigrants. Has the Chinese side requested the Malaysian side to hand them back?

A: We have noted relevant reports and are still verifying the specifics.

Q: Japan and the US will issue an interim report on the amendment of the Guidelines for US-Japan Defense Cooperation. What is China's comment on that?

A: The alliance between the US and Japan was a bilateral arrangement forged under particular historical conditions. Therefore, it should not step outside bilateral boundaries nor undermine the interests of a third party, including China. We will follow closely the development of the amendment of the Guidelines for US-Japan Defense Cooperation.

Q: The US and India issued a joint statement during Indian Prime Minister Modi's visit to the US, in which both countries expressed concerns over the tense situation in the South China Sea, and said that they would work together to ensure freedom of navigation in the South China Sea. What is China's comment on that?

A: The disputes over the South China Sea should be worked out by sovereign countries directly concerned through friendly consultations and negotiations. A third party should not involve itself in relevant issues.

Q: The DPRK recently sent a high-level delegation to the ROK. Both sides agreed to hold the 2nd round of high-level dialogue. What is China's comment on that?

A: We have noted relevant events. The DPRK sent a high-level delegation to attend the closing ceremony of Incheon Asian Games, and progress has been made in improving DPRK-ROK ties. China welcomes these developments and consistently supports both sides in improving relations through dialogue and moving forward reconciliation and cooperation. We hope that both the DPRK and the ROK can work towards the same direction, and continue to do more things that are conducive to enhancing mutual trust and improving bilateral ties.
