Premier Zhu Rongji at the Second ASEM Summit

On April 3 and 4 of 1998, ASEM II was held in London of the UK. Leaders of the 25 member states and President of the European Commission attended the Summit. Premier Zhu reviewed the positive results that ASEM had achieved since its inception and spoke highly of the exchanges and cooperation between Asia and Europe in the political, economic, trade, cultural and other fields. He proposed that an "Asia-Europe Scientific and Technological Ministerial Meeting" be held in order to promote exchanges in this field. His proposal received positive response from all quarters. Premier Zhu also elaborated how the Chinese Government looked at the Asian financial crisis and reaffirmed China's determination to ensure a sustained growth of its domestic economy and not to devaluate its Renminbi. He pointed out that Asia and Europe should try to find and expand the converging points of their common interests and establish and develop a new-type relationship between them for the next century. This would enable them to make new contribution to the peace and development of the two continents and the world at large.

During the Summit, Premier Zhu met leaders of some member states and Secretary-General of the United Nations separately and had an extensive and in-depth exchange of views on the bilateral relations, the Asian financial crisis, and regional and international issues of common concern. All this helped enhance the mutual understanding and friendship between China and the parties concerned.
