Jiang Enzhu

Mr. Jiang Enzhu, born in Gaoyou City of Jiangsu Province on 14thDecember 1938, served as vice minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China from December 1991 to December 1995.

After graduation from the English Department of Beijing Foreign Languages Institute, he was assigned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in October 1964.He worked in the Office of the Charge d'Affaires of the People's Republic ofChinainUK, then Embassy of the People's Republic ofChinainUKin the 1960s and 1970s.He worked in the Department of Western European Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and China Institute of International Studies from 1978 to 1981.He was invited to be a research fellow of theInstituteofInternational Studiesof theHarvardUniversity, then a visiting scholar of Brookings Institution from September 1981 to January 1983.From 1983 onward, he consecutively served as division chief, deputy director-general (August 1984 to February 1988) and director-general (February 1988 to March 1990) of the Department of Western European Affairs, then assistant minister (March 1990 to December 1991).He was appointed to be ambassador of the People's Republic ofChinato theUnited Kingdomin December 1995.

During the tenure of office of vice minister of Foreign Affairs, he was in charge of Western European, Hong Kong & Macao affairs, and paid visits to UK, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, France and many other countries.From April to November 1993, he held 17 rounds of talks with the representative of the British Government on the 1994/1995 election arrangement ofHong Kongin the capacity of representative of the Chinese Government.He concurrently served as deputy director of the Preliminary Committee under the Preparatory Committee of the HKSAR.He acted as director of Xinhua News Agency, Hong Kong Branch as from July 1997.
