On April 2, 2012, Chinese President Hu Jintao left Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia, for home, after a state visit to the southeast Asian nation.

During the visit, Hu met Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni, Senate President Chea Sim, National Assembly President Heng Samrin and Prime Minister Hun Sen. Hu and Cambodian leaders discussed further development of the comprehensive cooperation and coordination in international and regional affairs. The two sides also issued a joint statement and signed a host of economic and trade cooperation documents.

During his meeting with King Norodom Sihamoni, Hu said China enjoys traditional friendship with Cambodia and will promote the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership of cooperation and bring benefit to the two peoples based on the policy of "treating its neighbors well and as partners".

During their meeting, the Chinese president and Prime Minister Hun Sen exchanged in-depth views on bilateral ties and the regional situation, and agreed to jointly promote the bilateral comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership so that both peoples will remain good neighbors, good friends, good brothers and good partners forever. They also agreed to expand mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields and double two-way trade between the two countries to 5 billion U.S. dollars by the year of 2017.

Before his Cambodia visit, the Chinese leader attended the Seoul Nuclear Security Summit in the ROK capital and a leaders' meeting of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, known as BRICS, in New Delhi.

At the Nuclear Security Summit, Hu delivered an important speech with the title of Deepening Cooperation to Improve Nuclear Security, elaborating on China's propositions, efforts made and important measures taken in the field of nuclear security. He stressed that only by working together can countries realize the goal of universal nuclear security.

At the fourth BRICS summit, President Hu expounded on China’s positions on issues including global governance, sustainable development and cooperation among the BRICS members. He pointed out that BRICS are a major member of the big family of emerging markets and developing countries and the positive forces for world peace and common development. BRICS cooperation now stands at a new starting point and we should seek ways to build on past achievements and take BRICS cooperation to a new level through pioneering efforts.
