Wang Yi Holds Talks with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson

On March 18, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with visiting Secretary of State Rex Tillerson of the US in Beijing.

Wang Yi welcomed Rex Tillerson's visit to China, and expressed that since President Donald Trump took office, China-US relations are smoothly transiting and developing in a positive direction with joint efforts of both sides. China is willing to make joint efforts with the US to earnestly implement the important consensus reached by President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump, strengthen communication, expand cooperation, enhance trust, and properly handle differences, so as to push China-US relations in the new era for the healthy and stable development along the correct track as well as better benefit the two peoples and people of the world.

Wang Yi stressed that both China and the US should intensify communication and coordination to ensure smooth, successful and fruitful outcomes for exchanges between the two heads of state as well as exchanges at all levels in the next stage. Both sides should focus on cooperation, enhance communication and dialogues at high level and all levels, expand exchanges and cooperation in various fields covering diplomacy, trade, economy, the two militaries, law enforcement, people-to-people and cultural engagement and local level. The two countries should deepen coordination in major international and regional issues and intensify communication and cooperation within the multilateral frameworks.

Wang Yi expounded China's principles and stance on the Taiwan question and the South China Sea issue, and emphasized that both countries should respect each other's core interests and major concerns, and properly handle sensitive issues, in order to prevent the overall situation of China-US relations from unnecessary influence.

Rex Tillerson noted that since the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations nearly 40 years ago, the development of bilateral relations has scored enormous achievements. Facing the ever-changing international situation, it is necessary for the US and China to further intensify coordination and cooperation. The US is willing to work with China to, in accordance with the consensus reached by President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping, uphold the one-China policy, strive to tap more cooperation areas in the spirit that features no conflict, no confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation, and expand more fruitful US-China relations from a long-term perspective. The US side stands ready to, together with China, intensify exchanges at high level and in various fields, uplift dialogues and cooperation in such fields as diplomatic security, macroeconomic policy coordination, law enforcement, network, social humanities. The country hopes to actively make good preparations for bilateral high-level exchanges with China.

Both sides also exchanged views on the current Korean Peninsula situation and other issues of common concern. Wang Yi reiterated China's opposition to the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense missile defense system in the Republic of Korean by the US.
