On April 25, 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing with Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation Josep Borrell Fontelles of Spain, who was here for the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation.

Wang Yi said that Mr. Foreign Minister, as the representative of Prime Minister of Spain, is welcome to attend the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. Spain is an important cooperative partner in the joint construction of Belt and Road Initiative. Last year, President Xi Jinping paid a historic state visit to Spain, which promoted China-Spain comprehensive strategic partnership to a new height. Both sides should make joint efforts to well implement the consensus reached during the visit, take the joint construction of Belt and Road Initiative as an important basis, improve bilateral cooperation, expand trade and investment, enhance cooperation in information technology and other fields, and encourage enterprises of the two countries to carry out more mutually beneficial cooperation so as to inject new impetus into the development of China-Spain relations.

Josep Borrell Fontelles noted that every time I come to China, I feel surprised about the great achievements made by China in its development. There are no other countries like China that can make such achievements in such a short time. The Spanish side appreciates the Chinese side's contributions to upholding multilateralism and is willing to actively participate in the joint construction of Belt and Road Initiative. President Xi Jinping's successful visit to Spain last year opened a new prospect for the development of Spain-China relations. The Spanish side stands ready to work with the Chinese side to advance the continuous development of relations between the two countries.
