On January 29, 2021, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Yang Jiechi held a video meeting with Co-Chairs of Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) on Security Council Reform of the 75th Session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, Joanna Wronecka, Permanent Representative of Poland, and Alya Ahmed Saif Al-Thani, Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar in Beijing.

Yang Jiechi said that President Xi Jinping attended the high-level meetings commemorating the 75th anniversary of the UN in September last year, in which he explicitly expressed China's principled stance of firmly upholding multilateralism and safeguarding the authority of the UN in the post-pandemic era, and called for the UN to stand firm for justice, uphold the rule of law, promote cooperation, focus on real action and chart the course for the reform of global governance system.

Yang Jiechi pointed out that China has always supported reasonable and necessary reform of the Security Council. In face of new changes in the international environment and emerging new threats and challenges, the Security Council needs to keep up with the changing circumstances through reform and constant updating to improve its authority and effectiveness, and at the same time implement the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits and increase the representation and voice of developing countries, so as to give small and medium sized countries more access to its decision-making process. China will work with all parties to firmly support the IGN as a main channel for pursuing the Security Council reform, support the co-chairs in fulfilling their responsibilities, and support a "package" solution which takes the interests and concerns of all parties into consideration by holding extensive and patient consultation, forging consensus, bridging differences, taking gradual steps and meeting each other halfway.

Joanna Wronecka and Alya Ahmed Saif Al-Thani said that they highly value China's important role in upholding multilateralism and strengthening the role of the UN, and they are ready to have close communication with China on the Security Council reform. They will coordinate the interests of all parties under the framework of IGN, build consensus and maintain the momentum of dialogue and consultation to facilitate the Security Council reform in a responsible way.
