2022-05-22 20:55

On May 22, 2022, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and visiting Pakistani Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari jointly met the press after their talks in Guangzhou.

Wang Yi said, this is Mr. Bilawal's first official overseas visit since he took office as Foreign Minister of Pakistan, and also the first offline interaction between high-level officials of the two countries since the formation of the new Pakistani government. China and Pakistan are all-weather strategic cooperative partners and "ironclad" friends sharing weal and woe, with close strategic communication being a fine tradition of both sides. The two foreign ministers held fruitful talks, which further consolidated the traditional friendship between China and Pakistan, enhanced political mutual trust between the two countries, and strengthened both sides' confidence in cooperation. Wang Yi introduced the important five-pronged consensus reached by the two sides:

First, both sides agreed that the China-Pakistan friendship has withstood the test of time and is growing with new vitality, bilateral relations are rock-solid, and the solidarity and cooperation between the two sides has become an important stabilizing factor in a turbulent and changing world. We will firmly support each other's core interests and major concerns and continuously deepen strategic communication and pragmatic cooperation. While working together to achieve respective development and revitalization, we will accelerate the building of a closer China-Pakistan community with a shared future.

Second, both sides agreed that any terrorist attack against Chinese citizens in Pakistan is unacceptable, any despicable attempt to undermine China-Pakistan friendship is doomed to fail, and incidents such as the terrorist attack on the Confucius Institute in Karachi must not recur. China supports Pakistan's efforts to speed up investigation, hunt down the culprits and bring them to justice. China will continue to render support and assistance to Pakistan in fighting terrorism. The Pakistani side reiterated that it will further beef up security measures and make every effort to ensure the safety of all Chinese nationals, projects and institutions in Pakistan. The two sides agreed to launch strengthened measures to ensure the safety of Chinese nationals, institutions and projects in Pakistan, and formulate specific plans and put them into practice as soon as possible. The two sides called on the regional countries and the international community to form synergy and fight terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

Third, both sides agreed that all-round cooperation between China and Pakistan enjoys fruitful results and broad prospects. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has effectively improved Pakistan's infrastructure and boosted its socio-economic development. The two sides will seek greater synergy between the development strategies, further release the potential of economic cooperation, and push forward all CPEC projects in a safe, smooth, and high-quality manner. Both sides agreed to deepen cooperation in fields such as energy, industry, agriculture, information technology and transportation infrastructure, so as to accelerate the industrialization of Pakistan and enhance the momentum and resilience of Pakistan's economic development. China supports Pakistan in maintaining its economic and financial stability, making optimum use of the China-Pakistan Free Trade Agreement, and expanding the export of Pakistan's competitive products to China, thus better benefiting the two peoples, especially the Pakistani people. Both sides agreed to overcome the impact of the pandemic and take effective measures to facilitate necessary interactions and personnel exchanges between the two countries.

Fourth, both sides agreed that the world has entered a period of volatility and turbulence, and more than ever, the international community yearns for peace and development. The Global Development Initiative (GDI) and Global Security Initiative (GSI) put forward by China follow the trend of the times and contribute Chinese wisdom and solutions to solving the outstanding problems facing mankind today. China highly appreciates the fact that Pakistan was among the first to lend support to the GDI and the GSI. China is ready to work with other countries in the world to focus on the development agenda, meet security challenges, implement the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and join hands to build a community with a shared future for mankind.

Fifth, both sides agreed that the sound situation of peace, stability, cooperation and development in Asia results from the joint efforts of regional countries and deserves to be cherished. We call on all parties to respect each other, treat each other as equals, conduct win-win cooperation, and oppose the Cold War mentality, zero-sum game and bloc confrontation. It's important to consolidate and strengthen the open and inclusive regional cooperation framework, stay committed to solving hotspot issues through dialogue and consultation, and jointly safeguard regional peace and development.
