Wang Yi Meets with Minister Catherine Colonna for Europe and Foreign Affairs of France

On September 19, 2022 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Catherine Colonna on the sidelines of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York.

Wang Yi congratulated France on its rotating presidency of the UN Security Council. He expressed that both China and France, as permanent members of the Security Council, shoulder important responsibilities in maintaining international security and stability. We both stand for a multi-polar world and greater democracy in international relations, and advocate upholding the central role of the United Nations and the basic norms governing international relations based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. China is willing to maintain high-level exchanges and strengthen solidarity and coordination with France to jointly tackle the current global challenges emerging one after another, and inject more positive energy and stability into the world.

Colonna said that the relationship between France and China is crucial, and both countries have a diplomatic tradition of commitment to peace. Despite the profound changes in the current international situation, France and China remain committed to maintaining world peace, security and stability, and to relying on each other and working together to uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. France is pleased to see the sound and close communication between the two heads of state and the smooth progress of bilateral exchanges. France appreciates China's assistance in the resumption of direct flights to China by Air France and the return of French students to China for school. France is willing to deepen bilateral cooperation on climate change, biodiversity and food security, among other fields.

Wang Yi stressed that the overall stability of China-France relations in the changing international landscape is attributable to the strategic communication between the two heads of state, which has provided important strategic guidance for the development of bilateral relations and multilateral cooperation. China appreciates France's adherence to strategic autonomy. The Chinese side stands ready to work closely with France to strengthen cooperation in the fields of climate change, biodiversity and food security, and jointly address global challenges.

The two sides exchanged views on the Ukraine crisis. Colonna expressed concern over the protracted and escalating conflict. Wang Yi stressed that China always stands for resolving differences through dialogues and will continue to play a constructive role in promoting peace talks.
