Wang Yi Meets with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov

On September 21, 2022 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Lavrov wishes the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China a complete success. He expressed the belief that China will make new and greater achievements in its national development. Russia is ready to work with China to follow through on the important consensus reached by the two heads of state during the Samarkand Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and continuously promote practical cooperation between the two sides. The Global Development Initiative and the Global Security Initiative, put forward by President Xi Jinping, are very important and will form international synergy to promote peace, development, equality and justice in the world. Russia highly appreciates and actively supports the two initiatives. Russia looks forward to strengthening coordination and cooperation between the two sides in international and regional organizations such as the United Nations, the SCO and BRICS.

Wang Yi said, the two heads of state held an important meeting in Samarkand and reached new consensus, charting the course forward for the development of bilateral relations. China is ready to work with Russia to comprehensively and efficiently implement the important consensus reached by the heads of state. Now the COVID-19 pandemic is still severe, and the international landscape is undergoing complex changes. As permanent members of the UN Security Council and responsible major countries, China and Russia should play our due roles. The two sides should deepen strategic coordination, advance high-quality practical cooperation, take an active part in global governance, work together to address global challenges, push for an international order that is more just and more equitable, oppose unilateralism and power politics, and uphold justice for developing countries and medium and small countries.

The two sides exchanged views on the Ukraine issue. Wang Yi stressed, China will continue upholding an objective and just position to promote peace talks, and hopes that all parties refrain from giving up dialogue efforts and resolve security concerns through peace talks. Lavrov expounded on Russia's position, stressing that security is indivisible and Russia is still willing to solve problems through dialogue and negotiation.

The two sides also exchanged views on the situation on the Korean Peninsula and other topics.
