Wang Yi: Implement Resolution of the UN Security Council on Political Settlement of the Syrian Issue as Soon as Possible

2015/12/19

Local time December 19, 2015, Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed when jointly meeting the press with Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier of Germany in Berlin after the first round of China-Germany strategic dialogue on diplomatic and security affairs that after intensive consultations and hard work of all parties, on the afternoon of December 18, the United Nations (UN) Security Council passed a significant Resolution on political settlement of the Syrian issue, of which China voted in favor.

Wang Yi noted that the Resolution is a balanced agreement reflecting the consensus of all parties and the greatest common divisor. The most important feature of this Resolution lies in highlighting the general orientation of adhering to political settlement of the Syrian issue and the determination of the international community. Secondly, the Resolution makes it clear that the future and destiny of Syria should be decided independently by the Syrian people. Thirdly, it determines the general roadmap for political settlement of the Syrian issue. Fourthly, it makes it clear that the UN should intervene in the political settlement process of the Syrian issue in a wider range with more initiative and vigor. The main ideas of this Resolution conform to the basic position of China as well as the fundamental interests of the Syrian people. China hopes that all parties will work together to implement the Resolution as soon as possible.
