2016/01/07

On January 7, 2016, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with President of the “National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces” Alptekin Hocaoglu and his delegation, who were visiting China at the invitation of Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs.

Wang Yi expressed that the Resolution 2254 adopted by the UN Security Council clearly identified the general direction of politically solving the Syrian issue. Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem of Syria visited China two weeks ago and expressed Syria’s positive stance to attend the dialogues and negotiations chaired by the UN. China hopes that the “National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces” and other opposition groups in Syria will seize the opportunity to support and cooperate with the UN’s peace-keeping efforts, and attend the dialogues and negotiations unconditionally based on Syria’s reality, and expects that the Syrian government and the opposition groups will exchange practical views under the framework of the Resolution, enhance understanding, accumulate mutual trust and seek universally acceptable solutions for issues of respective concerns. As a representative opposition force, the “National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces” can take more active measures in ceasing fire and stopping violence so as to cooperate with the UN’s efforts to this end.

Wang Yi said that the Chinese people and the Syrian people enjoy traditional friendship. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China always upholds justice and promotes peace talks on the hotspot issues in the Middle East including the Syrian issue. China holds that the ultimate judgment criteria on the solving of hotspot issues lies in whether it can bring peace and happiness to people and whether it is in line with the overall and long-term interests of countries and peoples involved. China will continuously play a constructive role in politically solving the Syrian issue and keep providing humanitarian assistance to the Syrian refugees.

Alptekin Hocaoglu introduced the latest situation in Syria and the integration of the Syrian opposition groups. He agreed to Wang Yi’s views and suggestions and expressed that the “National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces” supports the Resolution 2254, dedicates to politically solving the Syrian issue, stands ready to attend the dialogues and negotiations chaired by the UN unconditionally and advocates that the Syrian government and the opposition groups should take measures to gradually establish mutual trust and solve all issues through the dialogues and negotiations.

Alptekin Hocaoglu appreciated China’s just and balanced stance on the Syrian issue, thanked China’s humanitarian assistance to the Syrian refugees, and expressed his hope that China will play a bigger role in politically solving the Syrian issue and his belief that the friendship between the Syrian people and the Chinese people will be maintained and constantly strengthened.
