Wang Yi: Taiwan Issue Is the Core Issue Affecting China-US Relations

2016/01/27

On January 27, 2016, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks and met the press in Beijing with visiting Secretary of State John Kerry of the US, elaborating China's stance on the Taiwan issue.

Wang Yi stressed that the Taiwan issue is the core issue affecting China-US relations. No matter how the situation changes in Taiwan, the basic fact that the mainland and Taiwan are one country remains unchanged and will never change. Upholding the "1992 Consensus" and opposing "Taiwan independence" are important preconditions and political foundation for the peaceful development of the cross-strait relations. The US should scrupulously abide by the one China policy, stick to the three joint communiqués between China and the US, honor its commitment of opposing "Taiwan independence" and support the peaceful development of the cross-strait relations with practical actions.
