Foreign Minister Wang Yi Meets with Minister of Maghreb Affairs, African Union and Arab League of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Abedelkader Messahel of Algeria

On May 11, 2016 local time, before attending in Doha the 7th Ministerial Meeting of the China-Arab States Cooperation Forum (CASCF), Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Minister of Maghreb Affairs, African Union and Arab League of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Abedelkader Messahel of Algeria.

Wang Yi expressed that as a major African country and an important member state of the League of Arab States (LAS), Algeria exerts unique influence on international and regional issues. China and Algeria enjoy profound traditional friendship, and always understand and support each other in issues involving respective core interests and major concerns. At present Algeria is at the key stage of national development, and China is willing to become Algeria's most reliable cooperative partner in Algeria's implementation of economic diversification strategy and help it improve self-development capability through enhancing cooperation in production capacity. China stands ready to work with Algeria to adjust to the new situation, and join hands to promote the further development of China's overall relations with Arab and African countries.

Abedelkader Messahel expressed that Algeria is a strong friend and partner of China in Africa and the Arab world. Both sides enjoy a firm and friendly political relationship as well as extensive and in-depth economic cooperation. The infrastructure construction conducted by Chinese enterprises in Algeria has made important contributions to Algeria's economic development. Algeria hopes to give full play to its role as Africa's gateway, further explore cooperation potential, expand fields for cooperation, conduct mutually beneficial cooperation in infrastructure, nuclear energy, aerospace and other fields, and promote enhanced cooperation between Arab states and China as well as between Africa and China at the same time. Algeria appreciates China's commitment to strengthening the unity of Arab states, attaches importance to the upcoming 7th CASCF Ministerial Meeting and stands ready to work with China to ensure the success of the forum.

Wang Yi introduced the history of the South China Sea issue and China's principles and stance on it. Abedelkader Messahel expressed that regarding the South China Sea issue, Algeria knows well of the content and provisions of related international law, therefore fully understands and supports China's stance, rights and interests.. The Algerian side supports to resolve relevant disputes through direct dialogues and negotiations.
